Super Mario Wiki aims to detail everything related to the Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Wario universe.
The wiki was created on August 12, 2005 by Porplemontage, with help from AgentSeethroo. Originally meant to cover only the Mario series, the site soon split into MarioWiki, DKWiki, and Wario Wiki (the latter being a project that only a limited few could access). A fourth sister wiki, Yoshi Wiki, was in the planning stages as well before the alliance project was scrapped, and all content returned to Super Mario Wiki in 2007.
The wiki covers the wide variety of topics related to the Mario series, including games, characters, locations, TV series, movies, and comics. As a wiki, anyone can register an account and help edit articles. Users gain added abilities after their first week, such as being able to create their userpage. This is meant to give new users a chance to get accustomed to the wiki before editing actual articles.
In February 2010, Super Mario Wiki, along with Bulbapedia and Zelda Wiki, allied themselves to become founding members of the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance.
